Mary Ellen Shafer, 79, of Sandusky, passed away late Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 6, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 15, 1927, in Plains, Ohio. She was retried from Hair Unlimited, where she had worked as a receptionist for several years. Prior to that, she had worked for many years as a waitress in a variety of local restaurants. She loved caring for her family and having them around her, and she especially had a love of meeting other people in her daily life. She enjoyed crocheting, but she will be mostly remembered by her friends and family as being a great cook and of having the knack of making something out of nothing. She was also a former social member of the American Legion Post 83.
She is survived by her children, Sandi Gildenmeister, Jerri Shafer, Robert F. (Jonnie) Shafer, Susan (Lee) Volmer, Vicki (Mike) Linkenbach, Rick (Kathy) Shafer and Julie (Mike) Marsinko; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mabel Meggitt, Shirley (John) Spurlin, Carolyn (Ron) Stewart and Brenda (Ron) Younce; brother, Terry (Jackie) Bartlett; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Vivian Naomi (Stage) Gabriel; father, Charles Edward Bartlett; and husband, Jerry F. Shafer, in 1979.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. William G. Wisell will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery, Castalia.
