Thelma M. Gainer, 89, Huron, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
She was born March 27, 1917, in Edmonton, Alberta, third child of James and Mabel (Kitchen) Bateman. She graduated from Edmonton Normal School and secretarial school. She was employed by Smith Insurance Company and the Agricultural Department of Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, and was a homemaker.
She was a founding member of Penn Hills, Pa., YMCA, where she was a Y Menettes; past member of First Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, where she taught Sunday school and was in the women's club; Strathcona Baptist Church in Edmonton; member of The Chapel; band parents and PTA of the Penn Hills School District and the Picklers. She was an avid bridge player and scout mom. She studied piano for 11 years. She loved traveling, typing, camping, her time spent at the Alternative Adult Care Center, where she received wonderful care, and being around family and friends to help them if they were in need.
She is survived by her children, Douglas (Marti) Gainer of Bournnais, Ill., Barry (Lynn) Gainer of Longwood, Fla., and Barbara Gainer of Huron; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Gainer, on June 5, 2005, whom she married Dec. 17, 1942, in Ames; her parents; and brothers, Weldon C. Bateman and Harold W. Bateman.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in The Chapel, 4444 Galloway Road, Sandusky. Pastor Dave Brown will officiate.
