Donald W. "Nick" Nickel, 93, of Huron, passed away early Wednesday morning, Jan. 24, 2007, in Erie County Care Facility, Huron, after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 24, 1913, in Fremont, and was a 1932 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He enjoyed fishing, playing pinochle and the horses. Mr. Nickel worked at Tony's Bakery, in Fremont, and during W.W.II was a guard at the Trojan Powder Company. He was a carpenter having worked at Dewey's Lumber, then Apel Lumber and later retiring from Stanley Builders. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont and Sandusky Eagles.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Vera Mae (Martin) Nickel; daughter, Sandra S. "Sandy" (Bob) Reiber of Sandusky; son, Thomas E. Nickel of Huron; three grandchildren, Eric and David (Beth) Reiber of Sandusky and Traci (Richard) Thompson of Covington, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Christopher Adcock, Austin Reiber and Mindy Graham; sister, Marlene (Marvin) Mullholland of Fremont; and a brother, Paul Nickel of Fremont.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Ida (Bowersox) Nickel; and a sister, Lucille Faist.
At the request of the family, he was cremated. His family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday at David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. A Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meadow Green Memorial Park Chapel, 2602 Bogart Road, Huron. The Rev. R. Bruce Morrison of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate.
