Mary Margaret Waldock, 76, of Huron, died unexpectedly Monday evening, Jan. 15, 2007, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, surrounded by close family members.
She was born June 12, 1930, in Sandusky and was a 1948 graduate of Sandusky High School. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1952 and taught school for many years in Denver, Colo., and Sandusky. Mary Margaret (Speers) married Fred Waldock on July 9, 1958. They went on to raise two children, a daughter and a son. Mary Margaret loved to learn and experience all that life has to offer. She traveled the world with Fred to visit her son in the many places his work took him. Earlier this summer they completed the "trip of a lifetime" on a Mediterranean cruise, which included Barcelona, Monaco, Venice and Rome, where they toured the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel. Mary Margaret was a talented watercolor artist and award-winning needlepoint designer. She later merged all of her talents to become one of the most prolific cross-stitch designers in the world, providing the designs for Oberlin Samplers and creating unique works for holidays, vacation destinations, cities around the globe, and every state in the nation. With the birth of her first grandson, she found a whole new life to enrich with her love, talents, and time. "Mimi" brought great joy to so many little lives and to all those who were privileged enough to know her.
Mary Margaret was a lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church. She was a member of Plum Brook Country Club and the Sandusky Yacht Club. Mary Margaret joined the Sandusky Library Board in 1966 and served as board president from 1976-80. She became an emeritus board member in 1991. She was a charter member of the Sandusky Library and Follett House Foundation, serving from 1990-97. She was also an active member of many organizations, including Kappa Kappa Gamma, P.E.O., Cedar Point Garden Club, Art Study Club, and College Women's Club.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick D. Waldock; her daughter, Ellen M. (Edward) Sturzinger of Sandusky; her son, Frederick "Rick" F. Waldock of Miami Beach, Fla.; two grandsons, Wilson and Samuel Sturzinger; her sister, Judith (Zep) Porterfield of Huron; her brother, Robert (Martha) Speers of Huron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Bender) Speers, in 2005; her father, Ray Speers, in 1963; and an infant son in 1961.
