Dorothy A. (Mapus) Simmons, 85, formerly of The Commons of Providence, Sandusky, passed to her Heavenly reunion, Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 in Stein Hospice, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 24, 1921 in Vickery and lived her life in the Vickery area for many years, graduating from Townsend High School in 1939. She worked briefly for Stephens Printing as a shipping manager and at the American Crayon Co. delivering and processing mail for the company executives and all departments. Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook and baker who enjoyed embroidery and gardening. She was the hostess of many family get together's, picnics and card parties during her many years as a homemaker. She enjoyed outings with her special friends in the "lunch bunch" and was a member of the Eagles Club in Sandusky.

She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Armour of Sandusky; two sons, Roger (Betty) Simmons of Daly City, Calif. and Dennis (Randy) Simmons of rural Sandusky. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren, Scott Simmons, Amy (Doug) Thompson, Paul and Jock Armour and Sean, Viola Austin and Doreen Simmons. She was also blessed to have two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Andrew Thompson.

Dorothy was the eldest of five children. She is also survived by her sister, Rosemary (Kenneth) Kingsborough of Castalia; sisters-in-law, Jean Mapus of Fremont, Ruth Mapus of Sandusky, Pat Mapus Dubois of Norwalk, Rosie Mapus Ash of Palm Harbor, Fla. and Dorothy Simmons Hedberg Wilcox of Kansas City, Mo.; brother-in-law, Louis (Lucille) Simmons of Higginsville, Mo.; 25 nieces and nephews and their children also survive.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul Austin Simmons, on Oct. 19, 1994; her parents, Albert and Dora (Velliquette) Mapus; father and mother-in-law, Whitsett Porter Simmons and Viola (Gentzel) Simmons; son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Armour Jr.; three brothers, Oscar, Leo and John Mapus; sisters-in-law, Margueritte (Winks) Morgan and Naomi (Lee) Ommert; two brothers-in-law; Glenn (Jean) Simmons and Norman (Maggie, Alta) Simmons with their respective spouses; and sister-in-law, Norma Deen Simmons. Also preceding her in death were three nephews, Richard Mapus and Larry and James Mapus.

The visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Clyde, where services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Ellsworth Cemetery.
