Claraetta "Clare" Steinberger, 92, of Sandusky, died peacefully Aug. 22, 2014, in the Stein Hospice Care Unit following a recent stroke.
She was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Lima, Ohio. In 1940 she graduated from Defiance High School. On Nov. 8, 1943, she married her high school sweetheart, David Steinberger.
She was a member since 1963 of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where she was a greeter for many years and was active in both the RCIA as a sponsor and in the Renew church program, often serving as a small group leader. In recent years, she and her daughter Susan attended the EXCLAIM concerts in Toledo. Clare was a Stein Hospice volunteer, both in the office and the care unit at Firelands South Campus. She was a past member of the Sandusky Sailing Club. Her interests included gardening, reading, walking, flower arranging, watching NASCAR and "Antique Road Show," singing, dancing, sailing, camping, canoeing and going to Put-in-Bay with family and friends. For her 90th birthday, her daughters treated her to a celebration in Charleston, S.C.
She was employed by Lawyers Title Insurance Company for 30 years, retiring in 1999.
Her greatest joy was her family and friends. Clare was their No. 1 fan when attending a grandchild's sporting event, and she had a special touch for always making birthday and holiday celebrations very special.
She is survived by three daughters, Cynthia (Dean Williams) Steinberger of South Euclid, Ohio, Susan (Russ) Wumer of Bowling Green, Ohio, Sharon (Steve) Lichtcsien of Sandusky and daughter-in-law, Janice Steinberger, of Marion, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Todd Steinberger, Franz (Michelle) Atschreiter, Claire (Justin) Tanner, Daniel (Ginette) Schmenk, David Schmenk (Emily Hayman), Katherine (Ryan) Cameron, James (Kristi) Schmenk and Kelsie Lichtcsien; four step-grandchildren, Jennifer Wumer, Elizabeth (Aaron) Walker, Kendra (Devin Bloomheart) Wumer and Leah (TJ) Walter; eight great-grandchildren, Stefani (Alec Smith), Justin and Ryan Steinberger, Aiden Schmenk, Haden and Harper Cameron, Rilynn and Sadie Schmenk; five step great-grandchildren, Hannah Wumer, Jackson and Joseph Walker and Logan and Maddox Cameron; great-great-grandchildren, Preston and Ellie Smith; three nieces, Barb Imber, Judy Brown and Karen Wassel; two nephews, Jon (Kathy) Craig and Steve (Linda) Imber; several other great-nieces and nephews; and special friends/extended family Barb Pitsenbarger, Ron Hoelzer and Ed Stout.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, David Martin Steinberger, in 2008; son, David Michael Steinberger, in 2009; mother, Edna (DeVoe) Wilson, in 1926; aunt who raised Clare, Ollie (Earl) Coder-Scheuerman; step uncle, Roy Scheuerman; stepsister/cousin, Marie (Jim) Coder-Imber; sister, Rozella Early; brother, Joseph Wilson; father, Joseph Wilson; three sisters-in-law, Katherine (Paul) Veith, Jane Steinberger and Mary (Jon) Craig; nephew, Don Wassel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, followed by a "Celebration of Life" luncheon in the Gathering Space at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Close family friend, the Rev. Marty Nassr, will officiate.
