William L. Newcomer Sr., 89, of Norwalk, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, in his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 11, 1925, in Ashland to William and Mary Newcomer.
He was the youngest of 14 children, attended Ashland Schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 until the war ended. He married the love of his life, Helen Sliwa, and lived in Chicago until moving to Sandusky in 1950 and then Norwalk in 1959. Together they raised eight children.
He worked at Eastern States Elevator in Huron and Ford Motor Co., where he retired.
He enjoyed playing dart ball, horseshoes, ping-pong, cards and board games with his children. He was a Little League coach and attended all of his children's activities. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Anna (Anderson) Newcomer of Florida; children, George (Therese Schwartz) Newcomer of Sidney, Linda (Larry) Holmer of Norwalk, Mary Laferty of Norwalk, Patrick Newcomer of Columbus and David (Patricia Willman) Newcomer of Powell; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (Sliwa) Newcomer, in 1985; second wife, Lois (Fitzgerald) Newcomer, in 1995; children, Jeffrey L. Newcomer, William L. Newcomer Jr. and Janice M. Newcomer in infancy.
Friends may call 3-7 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk. Msgr. Kenneth Morman, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery.
