Bernard W. “Poppy” Shaw, 88, of Sandusky died Sunday evening, Feb. 7, 2010, in Parkview Healthcare Center.
Bernard was born July 6, 1921, in Toledo, where he graduated from Woodward High School. He lived in Toledo for 72 years. He was a U.S. Coast Guard boatswain sonar mate during World War II, serving from 1942-45. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of the Masons and Local 1495-Painters, Paperhangers and Decorators Union.
Poppy was a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather, who loved his family, fishing, baking bread and growing his special tomatoes.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; children, Edward (Carol) Shaw and Marcia (John) Smith of Toledo, and Patricia (Michael) Babiuch of Huron; grandchildren, Christopher (Amy), Ryan (Allison) and Shawn Babiuch, Jennifer (James) Barber and Bradley Smith; and great-granddaughters, Aubrey Babiuch and Alyssa Barber.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Tillie Shaw, and brothers, Frank and Harry.
Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Thursday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2211 Mills St., Sandusky. The Rev. Gary Ulrich will officiate. Burial will be in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, Toledo.
