Marjorie Lois Matilda (Heckmann) Coleman, 85, of Vermilion, died Sunday, May 18, 2014, in her home after a short illness.

She was born June 1, 1928, in southern Manitowoc County, Wis. She had been a Vermilion and Sandusky resident for the past 46 years moving from Baxter, Iowa and Hublersburg, Pa.

Marjorie was educated in Town Meeme public school and Sheboygan Central High School. Graduating in 1946 she enrolled in Mission House (later Lakeland) College, Sheboygan, Wis. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 with major studies in English and Biology. She then prepared for teaching in Wisconsin schools.

Marjorie began her teaching career at age 12 as a Sunday School teacher in her home church of St. James (now UCC), Newton, Wis. After her degrees from Lakeland College she attended BGSU Firelands in Huron to become certified to teach at all age levels in Ohio, and pursued a career as a substitute teacher for 21 years in area schools such as Vermilion, Firelands, Berlin/Milan, Sandusky, St. Mary and Margaretta.

She was a member of the Vermilion United Church of Christ Congregational where she was active in the Abigail Circle. She was also a life member of the Erie County Retired Teachers Association since her retirement in 1990. Her interest is conservation shown as a supporter of Arbor Day and Nature Conservancy, where she purchased thousands of square feet of forest. She also enjoyed collecting kaleidoscopes, flower gardening, sewing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Rev. Glenn Coleman of Vermilion; daughter, Kathryn (Christopher) Daberko of Akron; sons, Paul ( Molly Carver) Coleman of Sandusky and Bruce Coleman of Stow, Ohio; grandson, Alexander Coleman; brothers, Warren (Freida) Heckmann and Edward Heckmann both of Spring Valley, Wis.; sister, Elizabeth (David) LaDuke of Rothbury, Mich.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cranston F. and Elsie (Lorfeld) Heckmann; and a sister, Bernice Nass.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Friday, May 23, until a Memorial Service at 11 a.m., at United Church of Christ Congregational, 990 State St., Vermilion. The Reverend Bob Richardson will officiate.
