Patricia M. (Lawrence) Hughes

Patricia M. (Lawrence) Hughes, 96, of Avon Lake, formerly of Sandusky, passed away late Tuesday morning, April 29, 2014, in Ennis Court, Lakewood, Ohio.

Born March 29, 1918, in Bergenfield, N.J., she was the daughter of Raymond and Mary (Keenan) Lawrence. During World War II she worked in a war plant but retired to raise her four children. Pat was an avid sewer and was well known for her Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls. In later years she made bears to give to children in hospitals and bags for resale at church functions. 

She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sandusky for 40 years, and a member and officer of the Altar Rosary Society until she moved to Avon Lake where she joined St. Joseph's Church. 

For over 35 years she volunteered every Friday at the gift shop at Providence Hospital in Sandusky. While volunteering for the Providence Women’s Auxiliary she accumulated over 20,000 hours of volunteer time. 

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Kathleen (Keith Applegate) Hughes, Eileen (Charles) Garven and Jeanne (Don) Sharrah; seven grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jason) Wetzel, Kimberly Kruse, Chad (Bridget) Garven, Robert (Besa) Sharrah, Maura Garven, Michael Sharrah and Kevin Garven; three great-grandchildren, Erika, Catherine and Miranda Wetzel; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene "Gene" Hughes, whom she married Aug. 7, 1943, and who passed away Jan. 8, 1998; a daughter, Patricia "Pat" Hughes; two brothers, Raymond and Henry Lawrence; and good friend, Dorothy Kobylarz. 

The family wishes to thank her caregivers at Ennis Court, Lakewood, Ohio and Holy Family Hospice, Parma, Ohio. 

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 2, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where a prayer service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Prayers will be recited at 9:40 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Fr. Joe Steinbauer officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Sandusky Central Catholic School, 410 W. Jefferson Street, Sandusky, OH 44870, or to one's favorite charity.
