Phyllis M. (Bowler) Quaintance, 91, of Huron, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at her son’s home in New Middletown, Ohio.
She was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Markdale, Ontario, Canada. She graduated as a registered nurse from Hamilton General Hospital in Hamilton in 1947. She enjoyed the yearly class reunions all the way through this past year’s 66th reunion. During her career, she worked at hospitals in Hamilton; Baltimore, Md.; New York City; Mineola Long Island, N.Y.; and in 1978 retired from Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky.
Her parents taught her early in life to love the Lord Jesus. She lived her life committed to her Lord, her husband and family, and her church and friends. Phyllis participated in, and gave leadership, to many ministries at Zion Lutheran Church in Huron, including the archives, food pantry, funeral luncheons, library, prayer chain, Shepherd’s Committee and women’s group and circle. She and her husband, Bob, also called on all the visitors to the church. Phyllis was a faithful Christian servant who loved to pray, study God’s Word and tirelessly serve alongside others with wisdom and compassion. Taped into the back of her Bible were the following words, which remind her family of Phyllis: “A CHRISTIAN IS: a MIND through which Christ thinks, a HEART through which Christ loves, a VOICE through which Christ speaks, a HAND through which Christ helps.”
She is survived by a daughter, Lori D. Kirk of Heath, Ohio; a son, the Rev. Robert H. (Nina) Quaintance, of New Middletown; four grandchildren, Kiersten Schneider, TSgt. Robert (Diana) Quaintance, Rose (Mike) Eisengart and Kathryn Quaintance (fiancé Paul Carmany); and two great-grandchildren, Jason and Joanna Eisengart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Quaintance (in 2012), whom she married Oct. 18, 1952, in Toronto; her parents, Harold S. and Edith C. (Austin) Bowler; and a grandson, Kirk Andrew Schneider.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, until a service 5 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 930 S. Main St., Huron. The Rev. Mandy Oleson will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Bucyrus, Ohio.
