Richard C. "Dick" Speir Sr., 89, of Sandusky, passed away late Friday morning, March 14, 2014, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1924, in Sandusky, to Carl Adam and Minnie W. (Widmaier) Speir. Dick was a 1943 graduate of Sandusky High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served during W.W. II and saw action in the South Pacific and Okinawa.
Dick worked for the City of Sandusky in maintenance and as an operator at Big Island Water Works for 30 years, retiring on April 1, 1990. Prior to that, for many years he worked as a mechanic at Studebaker, and later at, Overmeyer Dodge Chrysler garages.
He loved woodworking. Dick and Doris also spent more than 20 years wintering in Brooksville, Fla., with many friends.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for 64 years, a life member of the VFW Post 2529, a longtime member of the Vacationland Trav'lers Club in Castalia and a former member of the Bells and Beaus Square Dance Club.
Dick is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Ellen (Graves) Speir; a daughter, Linda (Chuck) Myers, of Sandusky; a son, Richard C. (Debra) Speir Jr., of Williamsburg, Ky.; three grandchildren, Charlie Myers, Laureen Gilliam and Richard C. Speir III; four great-grandchildren, Austin, Gabriel and Evan Gilliam and Connor Myers; four stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins in Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Betty Jane Stonerook.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19. The Rev. Timothy R. Nilsen will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky. Military honors will be conducted by the "Marines Forever" the final farewell burial detail.
