Satanta C. Vonthron, 39, of Huron died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, after an inspiringly, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Tanny, as she was known to her friends, left a legacy of positive attitudes, passionate friendships, and yellow smiley faces from her years as first an intervention specialist, and later as the first principal of the recently re-opened Shawnee Elementary School. Though she wore many hats throughout her career, she was always happiest when dealing directly with the students of Huron City Schools (evident in the countless number of drawings, achievements, postcards, and personal notes that adorned her office and her home). With her trademark smile, yellow "Tansbug" VW Beetle, and unmistakable greeting of "Hello, my friend!", Tanny's uncanny connection with children allowed her to excel at finding the potential in everyone she met - leaving them with a heart full of love and a pocket full of smiley face stickers.
In 2009, Tanny was diagnosed with cancer, but set about ensuring that her condition didn't define her. Moreover, as Tanny once described it, "I have cancer, it doesn't have me." Regardless of how hard her own personal struggles became, Tanny chose to hold fast to her sunny disposition and surrounded herself with positive people who lifted her up. For someone so slight in stature, Tanny had a presence that would light an entire room; it was the spirit of someone who truly lived for every moment. To that end, Tanny subscribed to the belief that "Life is about the journey, not the destination. The journey is the reward."
To attempt to quantify the number of lives that were touched by Tanny Vonthron is an exercise in futility; a simple drive through Huron reveals a yellow smiley face sign or sticker around every street corner and a hundred times as many stories of people who knew, admired, and loved her. For every one of those people, Tanny left a simple phrase: "We're all terminal; none of us knows our expiration date, so we'd better make the most out of every day that we've been given."
Tanny is survived by her parents, Carl and Deborah (Botte) Vonthron; her sister, Emma Vonthron; niece, Gracie, “Lulu” Darr; nephew, Oshae, “Cam” Vonthron; grandmother, Arlene Vonthron; aunts, uncles and cousins.
