Larry D. Jarrell, 75, residing in Sandusky, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 24, 2014, following a lengthy illness.
Larry was born March 19, 1938, in Slagle, W.Va., son of the late Hershell and Phillis (Lambert) Jarrell.
Larry graduated from Central High in Columbus, in 1956. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who proudly served his country from 1961-63. Larry worked for 30 years in the insurance business before retiring from General Motors in 1998.
Larry was a proud member of AMVETS Local 17. He was an avid collector of Civil War books and vintage sheet music. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing guitar, singing, gardening and spending early morning hours at Jackson Street Pier with his coffee and newspaper. Larry enjoyed a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
Larry is survived by his wife, Elaine Ackerman Jarrell, whom he married in 1967; his son, Bradley (Linda) Jarrell; daughter, Julie (Jayson) Melson; five grandchildren, Nathan, Emma, Lauren, Madeline Jarrell, and Brooklyn Melson; four sisters, Patricia (Lee) Geiger, of Castalia, Lucille (William) Bonczar, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Brenda (John) Jasper of Roseburg, Ore., and Gloria (Al Hasty) Jarrell, of Ukiah, Calif.; one brother, Roger L. Jarrell, of Shawmut, Mont.; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his faithful dog, Nick.
A private memorial service will take place at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky.Pastor John Mawhirter will preside.
