Patrick R. Ortner, 43, Sandusky, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, in Cleveland.
He was born Oct. 20, 1966, in Sandusky. He graduated in 1985 from Sandusky High School and earned an accounting degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1990.
Pat started playing tennis in the sixth grade, took lessons, and by the time he finished high school he had set a record -- 86 wins and 12 losses. He participated in junior tournaments and was ranked among the top 40 young men in the Midwest. He went on to play for two years at the college level and later began coaching tennis, his true passion.
He was a member of the United States Tennis Association -- Midwest Section and worked as a competitive training coach and the Davis/Wightman Cup Coach for ages 14 and under from January 1999 until his death. He worked at Baywinds Athletic Club as director of tennis from August 1991 until he died. He also worked for Tiffin University as the men's head tennis coach from July 2006-August 2008. He not only coached at Baywinds but also in Fremont, Sandusky and for Heidelberg University. He had 23 years of coaching experience and was certified through the U.S. Professional Tennis Registry.
Since 1974, 133 graduates of Baywinds Tennis Academy have received scholarships; more than half of those students benefited from Pat's coaching ability. Over the years, Pat taught more than 2,000 children from age three through college level, and numerous adults who took private or group lessons at Baywinds.
Pat is survived by his stepmother, Mary S. Ortner of Sandusky; sisters, Susan (Steve) Hodge of Cleveland, Linda (Ted) Morrow of Amherst, Elizabeth Hicks of Willard and Sylvia (Richard) Weyer of Castalia; brother, Mark Ortner of Sandusky; and numerous stepbrothers and stepsisters, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Ortner; and his mother, Dorothy (Patterson) Shupp.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. Tuesday until funeral services at 6 p.m. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. John Adams will officiate.
