William "Bill" O'Brien, 98, passed away peacefully in his sleep May 13, 2010, in Lutheran Memorial Home in Sandusky.

Bill was born July 8, 1911, in Niles, Ohio. During World War II, he was lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard at the U.S. Ordinance Plant in Canton, Ohio. After being a foreman at the Hoover Sweeper Co., Bill spent his remaining years if employment at Westinghouse Electric Co. in Columbus.

He belonged to Mason Lodge 169 in Lithopolis, Ohio, attended Columbus Avenue United Methodist Church in Sandusky, and was a member of David's Church of Christ in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

Bill loved his family and traveling. He also valued education and hard work and will always be remembered for his positive attitude and easy going nature. Though her lived in various cities, Bill always said that Sandusky, with its friendly people, was his favorite place.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Edith (Skakum), who passed away in 2003: his sister, Betty Young; and a half brother, Ronnie O'Brien.

He is survived by his children, Dennis (Claudia) O'Brien Sr., Martie (Ron) Robison and Judge Erich (Connie Toomey) O'Brien; half sister, Alice Kirsch; half bother, Lonnie O'Brien; five grandchildren, Dennis (Krista) O'Brien Jr., Richard (Carlotta) O'Brien, Jennifer (Randy) Ruszkowski, Matt (Tien) White, Brad (Amanda) White; and five great-grandchildren, Meghan Meinert, Reid O'Brien, Caroline O'Brien, Frederick O'Brien and Glenn O'Brien. Bill is also survived by his three "adopted" grandchildren, Kaitlin Toomey, Sarah Toomey and Jennifer Toomey.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 24 at Franklin Hills Memorial Garden, Ohio 674 and 5802 Elder Road in Canal Winchester. Following the service, a reception will be at the home of Martie Robison, 10835 Miller Ave., Canal Winchester.
