Katherine M. Dress, 98, of Put-in-Bay, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, in Portland House in Sandusky.
She was born July 22, 1915, on Put-in-Bay, daughter of the late Theodore and Lina (Rinkle) Phillips. She was a 1933 graduate of Put-in-Bay High School and up until her death, she was the oldest living graduate and resident of Put-in-Bay.
On Nov. 14, 1935, she married Chester H. Dress and he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1986.
During the 1960s, Katherine worked for the National Park Service where she cleaned the brass at Perry’s Monument daily. Meanwhile, she was also a mail deliverer from the airport to the Post Office.
She was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church on Put-in-Bay. During her spare time, she enjoyed making crafts, especially the Christmas ornaments she made from egg cartons. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and planting vegetables in her garden.
Survivors include her son, Dennis (Cheryl) Dress, of Rhode Island; daughter-in-law, Sonya (Ron) Dress-Olrick, of Sandusky; eight grandchildren, Donald (Robin) Dress, David (Kelly) Dress, Laureen (Matt) Miller, Linda (Dennis) Gray, Anne (Dale) Cook, Kim (Paul) Decesares, Tonya Dress and Steven Dress; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Duane Dress, in 1983; parents; and her sister, Juanita McCann.
Per Katherine’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Private family graveside services and burial will take place at Mapleleaf Cemetery on Put-in-Bay at a later date.
