Earl Joseph "Joe" McCormick, 84, of Vermilion, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, surrounded by his loving family in his residence after a long battle with cancer.
Earl was born March 14, 1929, in South Bend, Ind., and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 52 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving with Special Forces during the Korean War from 1952-1956. Earl was a pneumatic tool repairman for Ford Motor Co., Lorain. He retired in 1989 after 30 years of service.
Earl enjoyed writing poetry, and telling jokes. As a jack-of-all-trades he enjoyed learning new skills, inventing tools, products, new ways of doing things, and working on his home and cars, including his antique 1930 Model A. He was a member of the Local U.A.W 425, and the American Legion Post 397.
On June 25, 1953, he married, Joann (Harris) and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Mary "Cathy" (Michael) McClean of Amherst, Margaret "Sue" (Gary) Jordan of Attica, Michael "Joey" McCormick of Mentor, Ohio, Marsha Jonas of Louisville, Ky., and Melinda "Linny" (James) Garvey of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren, Joshua Gibson, Alec Miller, Mathew Jordan, Brianna Jordan, Tristan Jonas, Samuel Garvey, Patrick Garvey, William Garvey, and Audrey Garvey; brother, Bob (Lynn) McCormick of Sandusky; and sister, Karen Spaide of Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Elizabeth (O'Reilly) McCormick; and brothers Jack, Jerry, Tom, and Jim McCormick.
The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
