Kevin O’Halla, age 57, of Grandville, Mich., passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Kevin, a loving husband and father, was at home surrounded by loved ones at his side.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger W. O’Halla; and his grandparents, Joe and Julia Lucatch and Roger and Minnie O’Halla.
Kevin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Debbie O’Halla; children, Brian and Alison; mother, Marianne O’Halla of Huron; brothers, Mark (Anita) O’Halla, Bradley (Laurie) O’Halla, Craig (Nadine) O’Halla, Tim O’Halla; sisters, Maureen (Jim) Gorman, Kathleen (Jeff) Danevich; parents-in-law, John and Mary Ann Highlander; brother-in-law, Don (Patty) Highlander; and sister-in-law, Judy (Roger) Strait.
Kevin was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1956 and was the oldest of seven children.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from The Ohio State University and later earned his master’s degree in Information Systems Management from Ferris State University.
Kevin and Debbie met while working at General Motors in Sandusky, and moved to Grand Rapids after being married in 1981. Kevin was hired by Davenport College in 1984 in the data processing department as a programmer. He helped grow the I.T. department and later became Vice President of Information Technology. Kevin retired from Davenport University in 2009 as the Executive Vice President of Enrollment and Student Development. In 2010, Kevin joined Grand Rapids Community College as the Vice President of Information Technology. He quickly grew to appreciate the important role that GRCC plays in changing the lives of young people in West Michigan.
An avid sports fan and hockey player, Kevin closely followed the Red Wings, Lions, and Tigers, making many trips to Detroit over the years to attend games with his brothers and friends. Kevin was also a longtime supporter of The Ohio State Buckeyes. Kevin and his family enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Gulf Shores.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, until Mass at 11 a.m., at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main St., Huron. Interment will take place at Scott Cemetery, Huron.
