Donald B. Abbey, 81, of Palmetto, Fla., and formerly Norwalk, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, in Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Fla.
He was born May 17, 1928, in Norwalk. Don was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bradenton and Edison Memorial United Methodist Church in Milan. He was a 50-year life member of United Association of Journey and Apprentices of Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada and was also a member of Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 42 JATC since 1955. Don was a former employee of Ohio Gas Company for eight years, Boos Plumbing and Heating of Huron, and retired in 1989 from Wilkes Plumbing and Heating Company of Huron. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 711 of Norwalk since 1969. Don enjoyed boating. He had his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his own plane for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty M. (Jepsen) Abbey of Palmetto; daughters and son-in-law, Karen Simon of Norwalk, and Susan and Ed Lacy of Greenwich, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jennifer and Eric Meyer, Eric Horn, Michelle and Charlie June, Michael and Bridgette Lacy, Tracy and Junaid Abbasi, and Kelley and Gary Eddy; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Joanne Jakobsen of Denmark; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald A. Abbey; mother, Bertha (Stower) Jarvis; stepfather, Roy Jarvis; and son-in-law, Gerald W. Simon in 2001.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Monday in Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Dr. Timothy Kim, pastor of Edison Memorial United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk.
