Duane L. Gardner, age 89, of Castalia, died Monday morning, Jan. 6, 2014, in his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Bay Bridge, and graduated from Margaretta High School in 1942, where he was on the first six-man football team the school had, and also played basketball. Duane served in the U.S. Navy, and was a union electrician with IBEW Local 867. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Castalia, and the Perseverance Lodge 329 F.&A.M. for over 60 years. Duane enjoyed hunting, doing yard work and gardening, playing cards, spending time with his family, and going on cruises with his wife, Patricia.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Bohn) Gardner; three daughters, Terri Gardner of Sandusky, Jan (Charles) Adams of Castalia, and Cynthia (Raul) Veliz of Castalia; one son, Duane "Kim" (Julie) Gardner of Clyde; seven grandchildren, Teal (Brad) Balduff, Tara (Ed) Malone, James (Sarah) Gardner, Matt (Kristie) Gardner, Erin (Jon) Valko, and Kyle and Karli Veliz; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Zella (Smart) Gardner; four brothers; and two sisters.
Friends may call 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, and from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Grace Lutheran Church, 203 S. Washington St., Castalia. Rev. Kathleen Suggitt will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
