Donald Edward Doerner, 76, of Norwalk passed away Saturday, July 2, 2011, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
He was born Dec. 1, 1934, in Florence, Ohio, the son of Gustav and Lucinda (Smith) Doerner.
Don retired from the former GTE where he was a supervising field engineer. He was also a school teacher and coach at Milan High School. Don was the first basketball coach at the new Edison High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He enjoyed spending time at his cabin cutting firewood and meeting with his siblings every Thursday for coffee.
Survivors include his son, Mark (Fawn) Doerner of Bellevue; daughters, Cheryl (Steve) Vogel of Wichita, Kan., Valerie (Rick) Kasch of Bellbrook, Ohio; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Lewis Doerner and Robert Doerner, both of Milan; sisters, Marge Mittower of Fremont and Wilma Russ, June Wielnau, Doris Quayle, Judy Haas and Marian Webb, all of Milan.
In addition to his parents; his wife, Amelia Grace (Williams) Doerner whom he married June 22, 1957 in Milan; brothers, William and Russell Doerner; sisters, Helen Mittower and Dorothy Haag preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, in Edison Memorial UMC, 10 E. Church St., Milan.
Burial will follow in Milan Cemetery.
