Jerry Lee Matthews Sr.

Jerry Lee Matthews Sr., 68, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Chicago and Sandusky, died Nov. 19, 2013.

He was born Aug. 21, 1945, in Sandusky, to Achie and Odell Matthews, and was one of 15 children. On Dec. 3, 1966, he married Doris J. Harris, and to this union three children were born.

He graduated in 1965 from Perkins High School, and served in the U.S. Army as a metalworking apprentice from Feb. 1968-Oct. 1969, during the Vietnam War. Following his military service he returned to Chicago, where he graduated from Barber College and opened Jerry’s Hair Design in 1978.

He was an active member of Church of God in Chicago, and later Emmanuel Temple Church in Sandusky, where he served in the Brotherhood Auxiliary and as a member of The Gospel Ensemble. He enjoyed family, traveling, photography, and was a lover of music.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Doris J. (Harris); children, Jerry L. (Kimberly) Matthews Jr. of Detroit, Denise N. (David) Robinson and Davina (Darius) Moore, both of San Antonio, and Tara Lee McMorris of Columbus, Ohio; nine brothers, Henry B. (Betty) Matthews Sr. of Sandusky, Robert Matthews Sr. of Atlanta, Bennie Matthews Sr. of Sandusky, Tony (Diane) Matthews of Sandusky, Earl (Anna) Matthews of Evansville, Ind., Floyd (Gail) Matthews of Sandusky, Nathanial Matthews Sr. of Sandusky, Roy (Sharon) Matthews of Atlanta, and Victor (Valencia) Matthews of Chicago; three sisters, Mevelyn O. (Frederick) Alexander of Atlanta, Deborah Kay (Duane) Williams of Sandusky, and Minnie P. Matthews of Atlanta; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Achie and Odell Matthews; brother, Lester R. Matthews; and sister, Brenda E. Matthews.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, until funeral services at noon, at Emmanuel Temple Church, 128 E. Adams St., Sandusky. Bishop Rufus G.W. Sanders will officiate. Interment will follow at Perkins Cemetery.
