Wallace W. “Wally” Schiller, 82, of Oak Harbor, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, in his home.
He was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Oak Harbor, the son of Henry and Altha (Deal) Schiller. At the age of 12 he delivered newspapers to the troops in training at the Army National Guard at Camp Perry thru the Alexander family. He was a 1949 graduate of the Salem- Oak Harbor High School.
After high school he served briefly in the National Guard at Camp Perry before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Wally, not wanting to be in the Army, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Arcadia during the Korean War. Wally was in charge of organizing many of the USS Arcadia reunions for many years.
On July 26, 1962, he married the former Gaile P. Cluckey, who preceded him in death Sept. 12, 1996. Jan. 1, 1991, Wally retired from Ford in Sandusky, where he worked in the control room as a computer operator. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, and lifetime and active member of American Legion Post 114, both in Oak Harbor. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and track, as well as watching the Buckeyes, Browns, and Cavs.
Survivors include his daughter, Gina (Jim Mosher) Schiller of Oak Harbor; grand-dog “Squirt”; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Wally was preceded in death by brothers, Darrell and Kevin Schiller; and sisters, Darlene Crozier, Carolyn Buhrow, and Shirley Crennan.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, with the Rev. David A. Voll officiating. Burial will be in Salem Twp. Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor, where military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 114 and V.F.W. Post 8732.
