Mariann 'Minnie' Stander Hand

Mariann “Minnie” Stander Hand, 93, of Sarasota, Fla., and a summer resident of Chaska Beach, Huron, formerly of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, in Chaska Beach. 

Born in Mansfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of Carl and Eula (Ramsay) Stander. She was a 1938 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. She attended Fairmont Junior College in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Denison University in 1942, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art. While at Denison University, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. 

During WWII, she worked at Westinghouse in Washington, D.C., in the war order department, then transferred to Mansfield and worked in the design department for washers, dryers, and small appliances. 

Mariann married the love of her life, Avery Chapman Hand Jr., on Feb. 23, 1946. They celebrated 51 years of marriage, before he passed away in 1997.

Most of her life, she was a homemaker raising her four daughters, during which time she was a Girl Scout leader for more than 20 years.

Mariann had a very competitive spirit playing duplicate bridge and golf. She was proud to have made a hole-in-one. With an adventurous nature, she traveled to various places around the world. She had a green thumb, growing orchids and flowers. 

Mariann was a former member of the Huron Yacht Club, Ohio Women’s Senior Golfers, Plumbrook Country Club, and Cotillion Club.

She is survived by her four daughters, JoLynn Wright, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Jill (Jon) Hautzenroeder, of Huron, Heidi (John) Evans, Sarasota, and Holly Hand (John Rodwick), of Lakeside, Mont.; eight grandchildren, Carrie (Paul) Wright-Donaldson, Victoria, B.C., Canada, Jason Wright, Arlington, Va., Marianna Wright, of Toronto, Avery (Lauren) Hautzenroeder, of Cincinnati, Andrew (Jessica) Hautzenroeder, Casselberry, Fla., Reba Evans, Weehawken, N.J., Dylan Rodwick, Missoula, Mont., and Marley Rodwick, Salt Lake City, Utah; five great-grandchildren, Avery Anne and Holly Donaldson, of Victoria, Avery Nicholas Hautzenroeder, Aiden and Brogan Hughes, Casselberry, Fla.; many special nieces and nephews; her loving long-term personal assistant and caregivers, Diane Smith, Wislyne Francois and Barbara Smith; and her faithful canine companion, Reggie.

Her husband, Avery Chapman Hand Jr.; her brother, Richard Ramsay Stander; and her parents, Carl Henry Stander and Eula Katherine Ramsay Stander, preceded her in death.

Friends may visit with the family 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at her home in Chaska Beach. Friends are invited to attend graveside service at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in Mansfield Cemetery.
