Marion Metzger, 90, of Huron, died Wednesday, Sept 25, 2013, in Portland House, Sandusky, after being ill with Alzheimer’s dementia.
She was born May 13, 1923, in Bucyrus, Ohio, and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1941. She started working at General Electric Plant until 1944. She went to Bliss Business School in Columbus and after schooling she went to procurement at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, during the beginning of WWII when the government started hiring women when the men were drafted. From 1952-58 she went to Air Force Decentralizing and transferred to Shelby, Ohio, until it’s closing in 1960 and then was sent to Middletown, Ohio, Air Material Area, Olmstead A.F.B. From 1961-68 she was transferred to procurement with a promotion to Olmstead A.F.B and traveled 6 months to Hughes Aircraft Company at Culver City, Calif. She then went to Kelly A.F.B. in San Antonio. In 1973 she was assigned to MAC Headquarters in Saigon, Vietnam, to assure administrative contracting on all maintenance while the military was being withdrawn. This was one of her most exciting assignments.
In June 1974 the Air Force offered her an early retirement. She then came to Huron to live and settle and spent the winters in San Antonio.
She loved to travel and enjoyed boats and had been on 25 cruise ships.
She was a member of NARF and the Thursday Nite Women’s Club, Huron.
Survivors include her sister, Adelaide “Dudy” (Ken) Kinn, of Bucyrus; a niece, Jill Spears; nephews, John “Jack” (Jackie) Metzger Jr., of Huron, Tracy (Diane) Kinn, Lundy Kinn; and great-nieces, Miya Kinn and Jessica Metzger; and great-nephews, Brian, Ryan Spears, and Joshua, Jeffery, and Jacob Buckley; great-great-nieces, Calista, Colette, and Seayra; and great-great-nephews, Camden Braedon and Bricen.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Milton J. and Elsie (Lappan) Metzger; and two brothers, Chester and John “Jack” Metzger.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. Monday, Sept 30, until a service at 4 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron. The Rev. Philip Gardner, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sandusky, will officiate. A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Oakwood Cemetery, Bucyrus.
