Andres I. Vargas Jr., M.D.

Andres I. Vargas Jr., M.D., FACS, 81, of Norwalk, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, in the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born July 15, 1932, in Negros Occidental, Philippines, to Andres V. Vargas Sr. and Paterna I. Vargas.

After graduating from the University of Santo Tomas College Of Medicine in Manila, Philippines, in 1957, he completed his internship at St. Michael Hospital, Milwaukee, Wis., and was a general surgery resident at Church Home Hospital, Baltimore and Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Md. He finished his residency in Urology at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, and at French Hospital/Polyclinic Health Center, New York City.

He was certified by the American Board of Urology and practiced for more than 30 years in Norwalk on the medical staff of Fisher-Titus Medical Center before retiring in 2004. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, Huron County Medical Society and the American Urological Association.

Andres enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dr. Pura Garin-Vargas of Norwalk; children, Andrew R. and Cheryl Huang Vargas of Fremont, Calif., Dr. Albert V. and Karen Vargas of Sandusky, and Arthur T. Vargas of St. Charles, Ill.; grandchildren, Aaron, Alyssa, Albert, Benjamin, Christopher, Natalie, Ethan, and Austin; and sister, Lilia Octavio of Quezon City, Philippines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Sydney Vargas; sister, Nelly; and brother, Eddie.

Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, Father Eric Mueller will officiate. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
