Helen McM. Routh, 98, formerly of Sandusky, widow of A.C. Routh Jr., passed away peacefully Feb. 20, 2010, in Essex Meadows Health Center in Essex, Conn.
Born Helen Elizabeth McMillan in New York City, she grew up in White Plains and Scarsdale, N.Y., and attended Mount Holyoke College where she met her husband, then a student at Amherst College. They were married in 1932 and soon put down roots in Ohio, where they lived for the next 50 years, first in Sandusky and eventually in Huron.
An early aviatrix, she settled easily into an active family life in Sandusky, where her husband was president of Esmond Dairy Co., one of northern Ohio’s premier dairies at the time. Together they raised three children, Donald (Skip) of Deep River, Conn.; Alan of Lexington, Ky.; and Candace of Guilford, Conn.
Helen’s effervescent charm, humor and perpetual good nature were ever-present and are fond memories for all who knew her. Along the way, intricate needlepoint became her passion and provides a lasting memorial for her family and many friends.
Following the death of her husband in 1983, she chose to return to the East Coast, where she planted new roots in Essex as one of the original “Pioneers” (first residents) when Essex Meadows, a retirement community, opened in 1988 — a distinction in which she took great pride. Throughout life she loved her needlepoint, birds, animals, family, ice cream, Christmas and laughter — although not necessarily in that order.
In addition to her children, she is survived by two daughters-in-law, Carroll and Carol; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five nieces.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth; and her brother, Donald.
She will be missed but never forgotten.
At her request, services will be private.
Memorial gifts may be made to “Cure ATRT Now” Fund, c/o Dr. Susan Chi, Pediatric Neuro-Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St. SW331, Boston, MA 02118; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
