James A. Slate, 92, of Norwalk died Friday morning, Dec. 3, 2010, at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk.
He was born May 19, 1918, in Stokes County, N.C., son of the late James Washington Slate and Martha (Fulp) Slate. He served in the U.S. Army and moved to Norwalk in 1956 from Ruby, S.C. He was an independent truck driver for many years, retiring in 1980. He loved to work and enjoyed NASCAR racing.
He is survived by his children, Arlene E. Cahill, Ron A. (Jackie) Slate, Will O. (Lori) Slate, Helen V. (the late Fred) Mihalek and James A. (Anne) Slate Jr.; a sister, Adeline Hauser; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. (Carmichael) Slate; and sisters, Marjorie Crawley, and Annie Caroline Slate in infancy.
Friends may call from noon Saturday in Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk until service at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
