Robert W. Hilty, 78, of Huron, noted artist and retired Lutheran minister, went home to be with his Lord at Firelands Hospital, Sandusky, Friday evening, Oct. 29, 2010, after a long illness.
Bob was born in Orville, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1932. He graduated from Orville High School, graduated with a BA degree from Wittenberg University where he was "Athlete of the Year" in swimming and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Bob received a call to the ministry and entered Hamma Divinity School for theological training and served for 20 years as a Lutheran minister at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Massilon, Messiah Lutheran Church In Lyndhurst and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elyria. In 1979 he began pursuing his love of painting. In 1983, he was named "artist of the year" by Ducks Unlimited. His art has been carried in 200 galleries across the U.S. He taught painting at Firelands BGSU Campus and gave private lessons in his home studio for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Elnor; son, Todd (Katie) Hilty of North Ridgeville; four daughters, Dr. Brenda Douglas of Canton, Ohio, Karen Hilty of West Hills, Calif., and Brenda Sadoski and Sherry Glatte, both of Huron; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Lowell Hilty of Dellroy, Ohio; and sister, Jean Stickles of Akron, Ohio.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel (Brillhart) and Evert Hilty.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church, 930 Main St., Huron, and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until service at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Raymond Vance officiating. Burial will be in Grove Street Cemetery, New London, at a later date.
