Mary Margaret Mumford, born July 23, 1926, passed away quietly at the Sparrow Hospice facility in Lansing, Mich., June 22, 2013.
Born in Mansfield, she married World War II veteran Richard W. Mumford (1925-2001) in 1946, and the couple then lived in several northern Ohio cities including Mansfield, Huron, Elyria, and Norwalk.
She is survived by three married children, Lawrence (Donna) Mumford of Irvine, Calif., Diane (Robert Shockey) of East Lansing, Mich., and Eric (Devora Tulcensky) of St. Louis; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, David, and Sarah Shockey, and Sophia and Anna Mumford. Her granddaughter-in-law Jessica Shockey is pregnant with her great-grandchild.
Called “Margee” by friends and family, she was the only child of Paul and Lucille Young of Mansfield, and graduated from Mansfield High School in 1944. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Ohio Wesleyan University. She worked from the 1960s to the early 1980s as secretary of Windsor School in Elyria, and then as a partner in her husband Richard’s appraisal and real estate business. She also served as a volunteer at Christ Episcopal Church in Huron, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Elyria, and Calvary Baptist Church in Norwalk. She was a devoted homemaker and, at various times in her long life, loved boating, car travel, seagulls, house cats, and Route 66 lore.
A day devoted to her life and memory will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron, followed by a time of tribute led by Pastor James McClain of Calvary Baptist Church. An interment memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Ohio St., Huron.
