Michele Sortino, 98, of Sandusky, passed away early Monday, August 9, 2010 in Stein Hospice Care Center, following a brief illness.
He was born in Modica, Sicily, son of the late Giovanna (Guccione) and Giorgio Sortino. Mr. Sortino owned an office supply store in Modica and was a barber in Sicily. Michele's dream was to provide a better life for his family and he came to America, where he was a barber, owned and operated LaRiviera Hotel and the Holiday House Apartment Complex in Hollywood Beach, Fla.
Michele was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was devoted to the Blessed Mother "Madonna Delle Grazie" in Modica, Italy. He loved to play jokes on his family and friends and was a fun loving person. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by daughters, Margherita (John) Terranova and Giovanna (George) Ruta of Sandusky; his sons, George (Nancy) Sortino and James (Rosaria) Sortino of Sandusky; 14 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Michele was preceded in death by his first wife, Pasqualina Caruso; his second wife, Vincenza (Blundo) Sortino; his son, John Sortino in June of 1969; his parents; brothers, Giovanni, Vincenzo and Giorgio; and sisters, Margherita and Melina.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Groff Funeral Homes, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Thursday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Marty Nassr will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
