Catherine M. (Axtell) Alvers, 88, Sandusky, was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 17, 2010, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.
Catherine was born March 21, 1922, in Princeton, Ind., to Eldo and Flossie (Smith) Hill. The middle child of three girls, her mother passed away when she was 12, and her father then married Betty (Thomas) Hill.
She graduated from Olivet Nazarene College with a business administration degree. Catherine met her first husband, the Rev. Ronald Axtell, while attending Olivet. She was a devoted pastor's wife for 23 years until Ronald passed away of a very rare cancer in 1976. During this time, Ronald and Catherine both taught school and pastored eight different Nazarene churches in Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Ohio. She wore many hats as a pastor's wife. Some of these were Sunday school teacher, pianist, choir member and missionary president. She also grew to love fossil hunting with her husband and family.
Catherine remarried in 1996 to Herman Alvers of Sandusky. They shared 11 years together prior to his passing away. She resided at Parkvue Health Care Center since 2007, where she showed love to everyone she met. She enjoyed sewing, doing crafts, reading and puzzle books. She filled her days with sit-er-cise, bingo, and attending all the activities she could fit into her day. She was honored to be the Erie County Senior Fair Queen in 2008. She was a member of Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene.
Catherine lived a long full life. She loved God and her church, her family and her friends. She will be greatly missed by all.
