Richard Cheesman, 86, of Milan, passed away Friday afternoon, Aug. 2, 2013, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 1, 1927, in Ripley Twp., Ohio, son of the late Opal (Allen) and Brayton Cheesman. Dick attended Willard High School until 1944 when he left to proudly serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He later graduated from Willard High School. He was employed by the A & P Tea Company for 25 years and then Foodtown for several years, retiring in 1989. He then worked as a custodian for Erie County Courts for many years.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where he assumed the role of cemetery superintendent and fulfilled the position for 40 years. Richard was an avid sports fan. In his spare time he enjoyed church league dartball, traveling, gardening, camping, playing cards, woodworking, restoring antique furniture, and most of all spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Sharen (Powelson) Cheesman; six children, Terry Cheesman, Sue (Tod) terVeen, Jeanette (Ken) Hall, Cheryl (Chuck) Smalley and Darlene (Alan) Dick; 12 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Phyllis J. (Moran); three siblings, Betty Barnhart, Ella Jane Arnold and Ronald Cheesman; and two children in infancy, Timothy Cheesman, and a baby girl.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, until a funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 2712 W. Mason Road, Milan, OH 44846. The Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney will officiate. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, Milan Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements.
