Wayne C. Schafer, 86, of Huron died Saturday, June 12, 2010, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.
He was born April 24, 1924, in Norwalk and was a 1942 graduate of Monroeville High School. Wayne was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky, where he was past council president. He also served on many other church boards both locally and on the national level. Wayne was a basketball official for more than 36 years. He served as president and vice president of Ohio District ALCM and belonged to the National ALCM, was a synod council member of Northeast Ohio Synod, member of the Board of Regents at Capital University, past president of the Huron Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow Award recipient, and was the current chair of the Huron Township Board of Appeals.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Leola (Niemann) Schafer, whom he married Oct. 12, 1945; son, the Rev. Jerry (Cathy) Schafer of Pickerington, Ohio; and grandson, Evan Schafer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Emma (Uther) Schafer; and brothers, Clarence Schafer and Melvin Schafer.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. June 23, in Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky; the Rev. John Mawhirter and his son, the Rev. Jerry Schafer, will officiate. Private burial will be in Scott Cemetery, Huron Twp.
