Sr. Mary Mayilyn, SND, Rita Louise Mayle

Jul 30, 2013

Early in the morning of Tuesday, July 30, 2013, Sister Mary Marilyn entered eternal life after 72 years of religious commitment as a Sister of Notre Dame.

She was the oldest of four children born to Edward and Elizabeth Mayle, of Norwalk, along with her sister Mary and her two brothers Richard and Frank. Rita attended St. Paul’s Elementary and High schools. There, as she became involved in sports and social activities, her charming personality and humor were honed.

In September of 1937, Rita entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in Toledo. After her profession of vows in 1940, as Sister Mary Marilyn, she continued her education by receiving degrees from DeSales College, Toledo University and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She also became certified in administration. For 46 years she taught in the high schools of the Toledo Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame: St. Joseph, Fremont; St. Mary, Sandusky; St. Wendelin, Fostoria; St. John, Delphos; Notre Dame Academy, Toledo; St. Francis, Wheaton, Ill., and in 1969, she was missioned to Papua New Guinea where she was a teacher and headmistress in the high school until 1974. Sister Mary Marilyn loved working with teenagers and her students loved her in return.

Retiring from teaching in 1987, she devoted herself to pastoral and community service at St. Mary, Sandusky; Lial in Whitehouse; and the Provincial Center. Because of health needs she transferred to the Ursuline Center on Indian Road in 2010 where she finally gave her life back to the God she so well served over 94 years.

Preceding her in death were her beloved parents and brothers, Richard and Frank.

Left to mourn her passing is her sister, Mary Hickey, of Norwalk,Norwalk; many nieces and nephews; and the sisters of her religious community.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Toledo Provincial Center on Secor Road with Sharing of Memories at 7 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in the Provincial Center Chapel followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

Arrangements are made by Urbanski Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo. Any tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame.
