Eldon "Al" L. Matter, 79, of Castalia, died Friday night, July 26, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Sandusky, to Ernest and Leona (Hackenburg) Matter, and was a 1952 graduate of Sandusky High School. He joined the U. S. Army in 1954, proudly serving until being honorably discharged in 1956. He was employed by New Departure Hyatt for 41 years, retiring in 1993, and was the leader of the Sheet Metal Workers for many years.
Al was a member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ, Sandusky AMVETS, Sandusky American Legion, Kelleys Island VFW, and Fort Myers Beach Moose Club, and a longtime member of the Sandusky Power Squadron, serving as rendezvous chairman for many years.
Al most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the boathouse, going to Fort Myers Beach in the winter, and a good joke. He was an avid boater, hunter, and fisherman.
Al will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Nancy (Maley) Matter, whom he married Dec. 23, 1954; son Steve Matter, of Sandusky; daughter, Deb "Susie" Scott, and special son-in-law, Terry Scott, of Sandusky; granddaughters, Tami Scott, of Sandusky, and Traci (Brad) Beaverson, of Bradner, Ohio; great-granddaughter, Riley Beaverson, and expected great-granddaughter, Skylar Beaverson; sister, Janice (Richard) Halishak, of Seven Hills, Ohio; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Lowell (in infancy), Walter, Millard, Russell, Harold, and Myron Matter; and sister Joanne Streidl.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31. The Rev. Jerald Fenske will officiate. Entombment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, with American Legion Post 83 conducting military honors.
