Barbara Jean Leuchtag, 77, of Medina, Ohio, died peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her deeply, on July 26, 2013, while in the care of Hospice of Medina County.
The second of five children born to the late Kenneth and Martha (Davis) Cox, Barbara was born March 28, 1936, at Kenmore, Ohio, a day that became special for the family as it happened to be the birthdate of her mother and her older sister.
Barbara was raised in Kenmore and graduated from Kenmore High School. On April 19, 1958, at Firestone Park Baptist Church, she married the love of her life, Donald R. Leuchtag Sr. The couple began their traveling adventures early, having spent their honeymoon in Nassau and were fortunate to have shared in many voyages throughout their 55 years of marriage.
An ever active and caring individual, Barbara worked for a number of years as the credit manager for Bennett Lumber at Medina. However, she made it a priority to care for her family in many ways; having sewn countless Halloween costumes and outfits through the years and by being supportive, nurturing and compassionate in all her family’s personal endeavors. Barbara truly cherished the time spent with her family and later found great joy in the opportunities she shared with her grandchildren.
As a member of the Medina Presbyterian Church, Barbara served as an Elder and played an instrumental role in the church’s building projects. She was also a member of Eastern Star and enjoyed her monthly luncheons with the “Decums”, a group of ladies whose friendships have remained steadfast since elementary and high school.
Sailing alongside her husband Don was a passion of Barbara’s for more than 20 years. She was his “first mate”. The couple enjoyed the friendships made through their involvement with the Sandusky Yacht Club and spent the summers sailing the Great Lakes. They often ventured off the lakes and traveled south along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States where they spent many nights dining under the stars.
Barbara was best known however, for her gourmet cooking skills; having taken the opportunity to personally learn some trade secrets from the late Julia Child during cooking classes at The Greenbrier. Barbara’s passion for cooking was fueled by her love of cookbooks having amassed a countless number of them through the years. Her recreational reading time in the evenings was frequently spent studying one of new cookbooks cover to cover. Her family did not complain because they knew something new and wonderful would often be waiting on the dinner table the next evening.
In addition to her husband, Barbara leaves behind her family, a son, Donald (Melissa) Leuchtag Jr., of Medina; a daughter, Heather (Miro) Milicevic, of Akron, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Kristin, and Arin Leuchtag and Erik Milicevic.
Completing the family are her siblings, the Rev. Pat (the Rev. Jack) Barker of Dayton, Ohio, Dick (Linda) Cox, of Dennison, Ohio, and Gordon (Susan) Cox, of Canal Fulton, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her mother and father, Barbara was preceded in death by a brother, Bryan Cox, and her father and mother-in-law, Dr. Harry and Lois Leuchtag.
The family will greet guests 5-8 p.m. Monday July 29, in Catavolos Funeral Home, 3653 W. Market St., Akron. An additional hour of visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, until services at 11 a.m. at Medina Presbyterian Church, where the Rev. Henry Pearce will lead a service celebrating Barbara’s life. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park. Following services, the family invites guest to gather at the home of her daughter, Heather, for a time of food and fellowship.
The family requests that memorial contributions in Barbara’s name be directed to Hospice of Medina County, 5075 Windfall Road, Medina, OH 44256.
