He was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Malaga, Spain, son of the late Alex and Auleria (Bettencourt) Gallegos. Having spent his childhood in Spain, France, Germany, Argentina and Mexico, Baldomero had an adventurous beginning full of travel and the mastery of the arts of fencing and equestrian riding. While in boarding school in Argentina and Brazil, Baldomero traveled extensively in Europe while serving as a member of the European Fencing Team.
At the age of 19, Baldomero first came to the U.S. to attend Vanderbilt University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having seen active combat for two tours as a master sergeant and tank commander in the Korean War, followed by 13 years in the U.S Army Reserves.
He married Susan de Board in 1954 and they began their family. Over the years, Baldomero worked for the United Fruit Company as an accountant, Lyman Boats, Sandusky Foundry and later retired from General Motors, but his primary interest was always his love of the art of fencing. Well-known for his mastery of fencing, which he learned from his father, Baldomero taught hundreds of students over 50 years and dedicated countless hours as a volunteer to promote and revitalize this art form at a number of community organizations as well serving as a master of fencing in residence at Oberlin College.
Baldomero was a voracious reader with particular interest in military history, European history, ancient civilizations and French literature. He spoke Spanish and French and greatly enjoyed discussing history and philosophy with friends and colleagues. He also enjoyed watching Westerns, documentaries and listening to the Spanish guitar.
Widely recognized in his community, Baldomero was well known for his friendliness, warmth and generosity. He was extremely connected to his faith and was a longtime parishioner at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he served as
an usher for many years.
