Evelyn L. (Hire) Eastman, 96, of Sandusky and formerly North Fairfield, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
She was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Castalia, daughter of the late Charles W. and Serena (Dwight) Hire. She was raised in Castalia, was a graduate of Margaretta High School, and lived in North Fairfield since 1956. She worked at Shelby Depot, Norwalk Truck Line and at the North Fairfield Post Office.
She was a member of North Fairfield United Methodist Church, and was an auxiliary member of the American Legion. She resided at Portland House in Sandusky since November 2011. She loved to read and sent greeting cards to family members and friends for all occasions for many years. She was a great cook and enjoyed family gatherings and TV game shows. She was a member of the Chit Chat Club in North Fairfield and a former member of Castalia Congregational Phi Theta.
She is survived by her children, Sheila Fry, Martha Ryan and Carolyn (Thomas) Smith, all of Sandusky, Pat Christie of Mansfield, Ohio, Amos Eastman, of Shiloh, Ohio, and Dennis (Elaine) Ryan, of Fort Myers, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lester A. Eastman in 1954 and Glenn C. Eastman in 1991; stepson, Roger Eastman; great-grandson, Morgan Fry; sister, Marjorie L. Good; and brothers, Roland Hire, Wesley Hire and Milton Hire.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. Friday, July 5, until services at 1 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk. Burial will follow at North Fairfield Cemetery.
