Anthony S. "Tony" Guerra, 80, of Sandusky, passed away early Thursday afternoon, June 27, 2013, in MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 12, 1932, in Sandusky, son of the late Joseph and Maria (Poggiali) Guerra. Tony was a 1950 graduate of Sandusky High School. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during the Korean War. It was while he was serving his country that he was sent to Welding School thus learning the trade of welding.
After being discharged in 1955, he applied and was hired at Lake Erie Welding. By 1963, Tony had acquired a part ownership in the business and later in 1973 he became sole owner of Lake Erie Welding and Fabricating. Through years of hard work and a constantly changing market it became evident that the company name no longer represented what they did. So with more than a little discussion, he and his sons, who through the years came into the business, would later change the name of the company to LEWCO, INC. in 1994.
When he had time, he enjoyed golfing and was quite good at it, his awards were numerous. Boating was another activity he enjoyed and spending time on Kelleys Island. Tony always found time for his family. He loved spending time with them and his grandchildren and attending their many sports activities throughout the years. In the earlier days, he taught his sons how to play football in the backyard or he would play catch with them to prepare them for their days in Atom League. He eventually, became their coach when they were old enough to be on a team. When they moved on to Little League he was instrumental in building the ballparks on Hull Road, which still exist to this day. He was involved when the boys were in Boy Scouts and he would never miss a Girl Scouts Father-Daughter Dance with his daughter or even a dance recital.
Tony was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and in earlier days he was a member of the choir, he also served for 28 years as the representative to the St. Mary Central Catholic Education Foundation Board. He was a member of the IAB Club and while he was president he was instrumental in the building of the new club. He was named Business of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1978-79 and also received the Chambers first Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1996, he was chosen Entrepreneur of the Year of Northwest Ohio. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus; the Catawba Island Club; and the Sandusky Yacht Club. He was a member of the Sandusky Elks Club for more than 40 years and was inducted into the Elks Hall of Fame in 1997. He was a member of Plum Brook Country Club and had served on their board of trustees for three terms. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Sandusky, serving on the sports committee and involved with their Clothe-a-Child program. He had been a member of the Board of Trustees of Providence Hospital and, after they closed, he later served with Firelands Regional Medical Center Board of Directors. He served on the Citizens Banking Company Board of Trustees for a number of years and the Greater Erie Marketing Board of Legislative Affairs, as well as the Merry-Go-Round Museum and the Maritime Museum. Tony was awarded the Key to the City in 2001, for his work on the underpass on Columbus Avenue.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret M. "Peggy" (Blommer) Guerra; his children, Jim (Patty) Guerra and family, Phillip, Eric, Jeffrey, Adam and Alex, Ron (Tracy) Guerra and family, Tommy, Stephanie and Jude, Jerry (Shannon) Guerra and family, Jenny (David) Rieck and children, Gavin, Mason and Logan, Jessie (Mark) Tinus and their child Max, and Emily, Julie (Ty) Roth and family Taylor, Travis and Tanner; brother, Joe (Donna) Guerra, of Sandusky; and nieces and nephews.
