T. Jean "TJ" Steinert, 58, of Sandusky died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.
TJ was born Jan. 4, 1952, in Salem, Va., and grew up as a foster child in many southern states. After high school she worked many jobs in the Roanoke, Va., area before coming to Sandusky in 1979. She worked as a nurse's aide and supervisor for Sandusky Nursing Home from 1980-88, and as a service planner for Renaissance House, Inc. from 1988 until her retirement in 2007 due to disability. She found her niche working with the developmentally disabled population, positively impacting many lives.
She was a volunteer for the Erie County Special Olympics, where she also served on the board; she fostered and adopted many retired racing greyhounds, most recently with North Coast Greyhound Connection; and she fostered kittens for the Humane Society of Erie County.
TJ is survived by her husband, Rich Steinert, whom she married March 27, 1992; mother-in-law, Helen Steinert; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol Albert and Ron Albert, all of Sandusky.
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Norman Steinert.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Thursday in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Ted Stellhorn officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
