Joseph J. Brugnone, “Mr. B”, 74, of Bellevue, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
Joseph was born April 25, 1939, in Bellevue. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1957. He attended Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1961. Joseph started teaching at Bellevue High School in the fall of 1961 as the industrial arts teacher. Over the years he taught blueprint reading, basic electricity, drafting, metal shop, engineering drawing, architectural drafting, shop math and sociology. He became well known as “Mr. B” to students and community.
Joseph was a regular at sporting events for Bellevue Athletics as he assisted with the score board in the press box for football games, becoming known as one of the “Boys in the Box” which he enjoyed. He was often seen at basketball, wrestling and track events selling and taking tickets. He was a well-known presence and supporter of Bellevue Athletic functions and always willing to lend a hand.
Joseph was also the drivers education instructor while at Bellevue High School, teaching the rules of the road to hundreds of students over the years.
After 40 years of teaching, Joseph retired in 2001 and received an Excellence in Education Award. He continued to assist the athletic department whenever he could until 2011. He was presented with the Big Red Service Award in 2012.
In addition to teaching and assisting with the Bellevue Redmen Athletics, Joseph also designed the city flag for Bellevue in 1995. He was inspired to create the flag using the unique geographical setting of Bellevue being in four different counties.
Joseph enjoyed photography and would usually be seen with his camera at all family functions and events. He had quite the collection of photos and slides. He also enjoyed golfing and making his own wine.
He worked for more than 30 years at the family owned business, Bellevue Beverage Center.
Joseph was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Bellevue where he served as an usher and on the church board. He assisted with teaching religious studies at Immaculate Conception Catholic School. He was a member of FFA, Club Amer-Ital and also did Eucharistic duties at Bellevue Hospital.
Joseph is survived by brothers, Frank, Anthony (Juanita), James and William; sisters, Helen Marketti, Thelma Fields, Rosemary Ott, Francis McClanahan and Sandra Bellard; his nephew, Robert Fields; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph J. Brugnone Sr. and Sandra (Luzio) Brugnone.
Friends will be received 2-7 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Foos & Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue, where the Rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center St., Bellevue. Burial will follow at Bellevue Catholic Cemetery.
