Gary “Herbie” T. Phillips, 59, residing in Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, June 20, 2013, at his residence.
Gary was born Sept. 25, 1953, in Marinette, Wis., to Myron and Eleanore (Johnson) Phillips. Gary graduated from Bark River-Harris High School in Harris, Mich. He was a roofer, beginning his roofing career working for Ned Riedy Roofers for approximately 10 years.
His greatest joy in life was his family. His children all excelled athletically and he proudly supported each of them at their sporting events from grade school through college. He was looking forward to watching his grandson follow in their footsteps.
Gary is survived by his wife, Deborah (Seeholzer) Phillips, whom he married Aug. 4, 1982. He is also survived by his sons, Patrick (Melissa) Phillips of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Devin Phillips of Sandusky; daughter, Kathleen Phillips of Sandusky; grandson, Jackson Phillips of North Ridgeville; father, Myron Phillips of Bark River, Mich.; sisters, Judy (David) Peterson of Cadillac, Mich., and Deborah (Steven) Cannon of Mechanicville, N.Y.; brothers, Ron (Mary) Phillips of Bark River, and Daniel (Elaina) Phillips of Waukesha, Wis.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his mother, Eleanore (Johnson) Phillips, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Phillips.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. A funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 219 Chappel St., Kelleys Island. The Rev. Jacob Gordon will preside. Burial will follow in Kelleys Island Cemetery.
