Rollin G. Schwanger, 83, of Sandusky, passed away early Sunday afternoon, June 16, 2013, with his family by his side, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
He was born Dec. 14, 1929, in Sandusky, to Rollin G. and Ivous (Ward) Schwanger.
Rollin was a 1947 graduate of Sandusky High School. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, who proudly served his country from Aug. 14, 1948, to Aug. 13, 1949. He was employed as an electrician for Ferrell Cheek for over 27 years and 10 years at Sandusky Vinyl Products where he retired in 1993.
Rollin was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Elks Lodge 285, AMVETS, and the American Legion. In his spare time he enjoyed playing softball, volleyball, and traveling. He played football for the Sandusky Maroons. Rollin was also an avid golfer and fisherman, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and many grandchildren.
Rollin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley (Burton), whom he married June 27, 1953; his son, Tom (Becky) Schwanger; grandchildren, Josh Schwanger, Jesse (Jackie) Schwanger and Nikki Streng; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ted and Don Schwanger; son-in-law, Michael Dunn; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Rollin was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Dunn-Schwanger in 2011.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where Sandusky Elks Lodge 285 will conduct memorial services at 7 p.m. Friends may also call 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, at Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St., Sandusky. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., at the church, Rev. Jan Wood-Smith presiding. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
