Ronald “Ron” George Pearson, 77, of Berlin Heights passed away with his wife at his side Feb. 25, 2010, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.
Ron was born Dec. 22, 1932, in Chicago, where he was raised. An avid lover of sports, he was a starter on his North Park High School basketball and football teams, leading each team to undefeated seasons. His athletic abilities led him to receive a basketball scholarship to Oklahoma A&M University, now known as Oklahoma State University, playing four years for legendary coach Hank Iba.
Ron was a proud U.S. Navy veteran achieving the rank of second lieutenant. He entered the Navy after college and served four years as the Korean War was ending. After his military service, Ron received his MBA from Northwestern University.
In the fall of 1959, he met his wife, Laura, on a business trip to New York City. They were married the following summer of 1960. After a couple of stops, the couple settled in Connecticut where they planned to raise their two children. Ron was general manager of the very successful foodservice division of AMF until the breakup of the company became imminent. In 1974, Ron found the perfect opportunity in Sandusky as vice president and general manager of Chef’s Pantry and moved his family to the area. They built a house in Huron and stayed there for 12 years, later relocating to Berlin Heights. His professional life took an unexpected turn when Chef’s Pantry was sold in the early 1980’s. He then took the position as president of Bastian Blessing, a medium sized manufacturing company in Michigan. The trips back and forth were tough on him and the family, leading him to realize his long-time dream of starting his own company. In 1987, he founded Pearson Management Services, a management consulting firm which helped Midwestern companies expand their sales and distribution efforts nationwide. He thoroughly enjoyed his work before officially retiring last year.
Ron was very active in the local community throughout his 36 years in the area. He was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky and enjoyed singing in their choir for 35 years. Ron played in many theatre performances over the years at Firelands College and Harlequins Theatre, including the starring role in JB. He also served as president of the Sandusky Arts Council and president of Zion Lutheran Church council.
Ron enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family. He was a wonderful joke teller, loved to laugh and had a heartwarming sense of humor that brought smiles to those around him.
In 2008, Ron was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, which is a disease of the lungs that gradually limits the ability to breathe. Never one to complain, he probably had been suffering the effects of the disease for years.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed by all.
Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, Laura (Miller) Pearson; two children, Kim and Paul; three grandchildren, Aiden, Collin and Ryan; and his brother, Loring.
A memorial service will be in Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky on June 18, 2010, the 50th wedding anniversary of Ron and Laura.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870; or Back to the Wild, P.O. Box 423, Castalia, OH 44824.
