Clarence J. (Jim) Armstrong, 75, of Sandusky died Sunday evening, Feb. 28, 2010, in Firelands Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 3, 1935, son of the late Clarence H. and Naomi (DeYo) Armstrong. Jim was a 1954 Huron High School graduate where he lettered 13 times in four years and held several basketball records until recently. Jim was inducted into the Huron Hall of Fame in 1994 for football and basketball. He attended Syracuse University where he played football before injuring his knee and also played football for the armed services while he served in the U.S. Navy. Jim retired from the Ford Motor Co. in 1990 after 25 years of service.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sandusky American Legion post 83, and Fremont Moose. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and playing cards and was an avid OSU fan. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds and spending time with his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his wife, Alice (Binder) whom he married May 2, 2003; four sons, Michael J. (Diane) of Sandusky, David L. of Monroeville, Steven C. (Laura) of Indianapolis and Dennis S. of Wisconsin; two stepchildren, Mark (Michelle) Wargo and Kimberly (Brad) Ahrens of Saline, Mich.; five grandchildren, Dawson, Jayna, Carter, Macy and Evan James; one sister, Sue (Roger) LaValle of Westerville, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara (Zierolf) Armstrong in 1988; his parents; one brother, Jack Armstrong; and his aunt and uncle, Ruth and Ralph Scharman.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Philip Feltman will officiate.
