Odessa Calloway, 99, of Sandusky, left this life on Friday, May 18, 2013, in Erie County Care Facility, and ascended to her Heavenly home well and happy to be with family, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 7, 1913, in North Little Rock, Ark., daughter of the Holy union of the late Willie and Roberta (White) Reed, and came to Sandusky at an early age, where she attended Sandusky Public Schools.
Odessa accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as a member for more than 70 years. She helped organize and implement the Twilight Guild, Busy Bee Missionary Circle, and was a faithful member of the mass choir, where she sang solo — her favorite being “Too Close.”
She was employed by Philco, Vogels, and Memorial Hospital for many years, before retiring to do foster care for families in need.
Odessa leaves to mourn her passing, daughter, Paula Keys, of Sandusky; grandchildren, Kiya and Jeffrey Johnson, of Sandusky; six great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter, all of Sandusky; sister, Blanche Foster, of Sandusky; guardian mother for nieces, Adele Hasan, of Sandusky, and Tiffany Jarrett, of North Carolina; foster mother to Irene Suggs, Betty Jo Crawford and Jeanie Crabb, all of Sandusky; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and special friend, Stella Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; brother, Willie D. Reed; step father, Curtis Gordon; and a special aunt, Bessie Stone.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. The Rev. Stuart Abrams will provide the eulogy. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
