Gene A. Whaley, 74, of Sandusky, passed away Sunday morning, May 19, 2013, at the Providence Care Center, in the care of Stein Hospice, following a lengthy bout of lung cancer.
He was born Aug. 1, 1938, in Sandusky, to Hank and Mable (Chamberlain) Whaley.
Gene was a 1956 graduate of Sandusky High School. He worked at Lyman Boat Works for several years. He then worked for Ford Motor Company for 35 years, retiring in 1997. Gene was a member of Meadowlawn and Vermilion Church of Christ since 1964. He enjoyed flowers and gardening. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.
Gene is survived by his wife, Anna (Richardson) whom he married October 30, 1960; two daughters, Debbie (David) Jackson of Cordova, Tenn., and Carolyn (Shawn) Wallace of Grove City, Ohio; son, Gene (Donna Jean) Whaley Jr. of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; eight grandchildren, David, Danielle, Candace, Caitlin, Kristin, Corey, Aidan, and Sara; three great-grandchildren, Aubree, Ashlynn, and Addison; one brother, Richard (Joyce) Whaley of Sandusky; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Vivian Fabick Curry, Hank Whaley, Fred Whaley, and Woody Wood.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at the funeral home. Gene’s son-in-law, Shawn Wallace, of Grove City Church of Christ, will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Oakland cemetery.
