John D. Swain, 93, residing in Wilmore, Ky., passed away Monday afternoon, May 13, 2013, in Thompson Hood Veterans Center.
John was born Nov. 20, 1919, in Talladega County, Ala., son of the late Alfonza and Beulah (Terrell) Swain.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Army who proudly served his country working as a military firefighter. He retired from Farrell Cheek, and was the owner and operator of Swain's Barber Shop for more than 50 years.
In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as spending time with his family and friends.
John is survived by his two daughters, Thelma (Charles) Duvall, of Kentucky, and Ernestine (Thomas) Anderson, of North Carolina; one son, Larry Swain, of Sandusky; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; five sisters, Betty Brown, Ann Jones, Bertha Orr, Eppie Harvey and Lena Campbell; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
John was preceded in death by wife of 55 years, Evelyn (Twymon) Swain ; son, Herman Swain; parents; sister, Eloise Baker; and two brothers, Alfonza Swain Jr. and Josephus Swain.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Second Baptist Church, 315 Decatur St., Sandusky. Bobby Langdon will preside. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
